Medical acupuncture is the term used to describe acupuncture performed by a doctor trained and licensed in Western medicine that has also had thorough training in acupuncture as a specialty practice. Such a doctor can use one or the other approach, or a combination of both as the need arises, to treat an illness.
The World Health Organization recognizes the use of acupuncture in the treatment of a wide range of medical problems, including:
-
Digestive disorders: irritable bowel symptoms, gastritis and hyperacidity, spastic colon, constipation, diarrhea, nausea including pregnancy or chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting
- Respiratory disorders: allergic rhinitis including hay fever, sinusitis, sore throat, bronchitis, asthma, recurrent chest infections
- Neurological and muscular disorders: headaches, various forms of tendonitis, facial pain including TMJ, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, low back or neck pain, sciatica, sprains and strains, plantar fasciitis or heel pain
- Lifestyle changes: insomnia, smoking cessation, weight loss, relief of anxiety or panic disorders, depression
- Urinary, menstrual and reproductive problems: painful or otherwise difficult menstruation.
Acupuncture is particularly useful in resolving physical problems related to tension and emotional conditions.
