Restylane: a new option for wrinkle reduction and lip enhancement
Since 1996, more than a million people in 60 countries have been treated with Restylane, a clear, biodegradable gel designed to fill in wrinkles and fill out lips. Thanks to recent approval by the Food & Drug Administration, Restylane is now available in the United States for cosmetic dermatology and HMF has it!
Developed in Sweden, Restylane is a form of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance already present in the human body. It gives volume to the skin, lubricates the joints and gives the eyes their shape.
The incidence of allergic reaction is almost non-existent because hyaluronic acid contains no animal proteins. Collagen requires a skin test and a four-week waiting period to rule out an allergic reaction. Restylane, on the other hand, can be administered immediately.
The gel is injected into the skin in tiny amounts with a very fine needle. Once in the skin, Restylane works by creating volume. The result is immediate and can last six months or even more depending on the individual and the area being treated. By comparison, both collagen and Botox last only about four months.
HMF dermatologist Patricia Cavender, M.D. has completed training on this new product and is excited about offering it to patients.
"I’ve gotten great results with collagen and Botox over the years, but Restylane is the next generation product for correcting facial lines and wrinkles—even those deep lines that go from the nose to the corners of the mouth," says Dr. Cavender. She predicts she’ll use Restylane in combination with other fillers to create a youthful look.
"Restylane is not permanent, but the effect fades slowly over time, so there is no abrupt change," says Dr. Cavender. "Patients who want to maintain the smoother look schedule follow-up treatments every six months or so."
