If you’re tired of shaving, waxing or using depilatories to remove unwanted hair, it’s time to consider a permanent option: pulsed light hair reduction. HMF dermatologists and physician assistants have logged hundreds of hours with the Palomar Pulsed Light System, a handheld device that delivers light from specific parts of the spectrum. This technology has been clinically proven to be more effective than traditional lasers for hair reduction.
"This light loosens the existing hair and prevents the follicle from growing new hair," says Elena Forster, PA-C. "The light is filtered to prevent any UV damage to the skin."
Small areas, like the underarms, can be treated in 10 to 15 minutes. Even legs and backs can be treated in approximately 30 minutes. Any area of the body can be treated, except the area around the eyes.
The device has different spot sizes to target large or small areas. Adjusting the wavelength can target fine or coarse hair. In addition, light hair on light skin, and dark hair on dark skin can be treated. Older technology worked best with a high contrast between hair color and skin color.
To remove as much unwanted hair as possible, patients will need follow-up visits to treat the hair follicles that were dormant during previous office visits.
Pulsed light hair removal is nearly painless, but some patients experience minor, temporary swelling after the treatment. Even so, "patients love the results and often come back to have other areas treated," says Forster. "Spring and summer are our busiest times."
After a treatment, patients can return to work and activities right away. Hair removal does not increase sensitivity to sun, although sunscreen is always advised.
