Once upon a time, all the buzz was about Botox. But compounds for improving your appearance have multiplied in recent years, and now patients can discuss a variety of options with their HMF dermatologist. Here are fast facts on the most popular injectables.

Botox

Effect: Temporary reduction of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows by relaxing the muscles that create frowning. Also reduces lines around eyes (crow’s feet) and lines higher on the forehead.

Duration: Three to four months.

Notes: Botox has become very popular with male patients, especially since it leaves no marks on the skin (like incisions from a face lift).

Juvéderm

Effect: Adds volume and hydration to smooth facial wrinkles such as smile lines and nasolabial folds (those creases that run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth).

Duration: Results can last as long as one year, although touch-ups are needed for some patients.

Notes: Has replaced collagen as a filler.

Perlane

Effect: Smoothes facial wrinkles such as smile lines and nasolabial folds.

Duration: Six to twelve months.

Notes: Effective for correcting deeper folds.

Radiesse

Effect: Stimulates your body to produce new collagen which fills in wrinkles and deeper folds, and adds volume to facial skin. Effective for correcting lost volume caused by aging.

Duration: At least one year.

Notes: Juvéderm, Perlane, and Restylane are hyaluronic fillers, while Radiesse is made of another substance.

Restylane

Effect: Smoothes facial wrinkles such as smile lines and nasolabial folds.

Duration: At least six months to a year.

Notes: The world’s most-used dermal filler.
